Lazio, the cradle and the homeland of Italian archeology, gives its visitors a warm and special welcome, making it immediately enjoy its inestimable archaeological beauties. In fact, shortly after crossing the border between Region of Campania and Lazio, on the right bank of the Garigliano River, meet the ruins of the ancient City of Minturno (or Minturnae as the Romans said), an area of enormous historical and monumental value. Guilty of being deployed on the side of the Sannites in the wars between the latter and the Romans, Minturnae, as well as other cities in the area (Ausonia and Vescia), was conquered and completely razed to the ground by the Romans winners. A merely fortuitous event marked the rebirth of this settlement: for the will of the consul Appio Claudio Cieco around 312 a. C. was built the Appia Way which was running from Rome to Capua and passing through the center of the old and destroyed Minturnae. Then, in 295 BC, the Romans, including the economic and commercial potential of the old enemy city (proximity to a navigable river, to the sea and to Appia Way), decided to reconstruct it and to give it even the privileged status of Roman citizenship, which It means that its inhabitants enjoyed Roman citizenship and its monuments had to resume as faithfully as possible to Rome as the Roman colony was almost a “clone” of true Rome.
Over the centuries, the city has lived in various phases (primitive phase, late republican phase, August phase and Adrian phase) and therefore various changes that led to the abandonment of the spartan aspect of “castrum” soon to be enlarged to embellish new monuments and new temples, to expand with new residential areas and finally to move from a city of tufa (republican age) and stone (augustean age) to a masonry city under Emperor Adriano (II century AD ). The visit to the ruins of Minturnae will therefore be a trip to the time, as it will allow you to get through the monuments, roads, houses, various building architecture and the different techniques of each of the city’s life stages.
Here is a little taste of what you see during the visit:
- The primitive nucleus of the Roman colony, the so-called “castrum” with square planes bounded by three-meter thick walls, in which the vertical roads (decumans) intersected with horizontal roads (hinges), forming a sort of cross-link or chessboard.
- An original stretch of the ancient Appian Way, which constitutes the central decumano, called maximus, with basalt stone blocks still perfectly preserved.
- The remains of the second republican town wall in square work and the republican forum delimited by triportico;
- Capitolium, the temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva), which architecturally resembles the temple of Jupiter Ottimo Massimo, built on the hill of the Capitol in Rome;
- The Capitolium can not be missed in a Roman colony, as the latter, as already mentioned, represents almost a “small Rome”;
- The Augustus Temple for the goddess Concordia, the temple of divine Caesar, the imperial hole (all built in the Augustan age);
- The Macellum or market of square type and central tholos, dating back to the architectural style of Adriano’s age;
- The Spas in which clearly distinguish the three environments of the calidarium and the trepidarium (where the suspension system and the tubes set in the walls are possible) and frigidarium is the outdoor swimming pool (natatio);
- The Theater built in the I century B.C. (late-republican age) in opus reticulatum and then redone in opus latericium under Adriano;
Is perfectly intact with its classical staging, cavea and orchestra breakdown and accommodates 4000 spectators; In its back are visible the spaces that once housed the shops and tabernacles for the refreshment of the spectators. Under the theater is the Antiquarium, a small museum where statues and inscriptions are preserved throughout the archaeological area; - Adrian Domus, including the domus of spas that has a private spa and valuable mosaics.
The visit is not over yet! Within the archaeological area you can admire another wonderful work that will suddenly catapult you from the Roman era to the Bourbon era in the 19th century. the “Real Ferdinando”, the first Iron bridge in Italy (with iron chains) built by King Ferdinand of Bourbon in 1832.
Not far from the ruins, outside the old walls, the place where the old river port of Minturnae stood at the mouth of the Garigliano was identified; Nearby remains of an ancient temple dating back to the 4th century. B.C. , The period when Minturno was a town of Aurunci, an Italic people. It was built in blocks of gray tuff rock and was devoted to one of the major divinities of the aurun people, the Great Goddess Marica (often mistakenly called nymphs) that protected the sailors and the offspring. At its temple, precisely on the left bank of the Garigliano, stood the “lucus Maricae”, the sacred forest to the goddess (today the pine grove of Baia Domizia), where sacrifices were made in his honor.
The Minturno trip takes more or less 5/6 hours including the round trip but it depends by departure point and can be performed in the morning and in the afternoon as the site is open from 9am to 7pm. The entrance ticket costs € 5 per person and allows you to visit the iron bridge as well.
The journey back or forth from Minturno will give you an unexpected emotion: a majestic architectural work, essential to the life of the old Roman Minturnae that will leave you breathless. What is this last marvel?

EXCELLENT Based on 280 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor sharon7772Verified Excellent tour We had a wonderful day with a great TOUR GUIDE. He was very professional, prompt in his communications, knowledgeable, and personable. We highly recommend using him for all of your tour needs.Posted on Tripadvisor Rick GVerified Personal Touch of Amalfi-Sorrento,and Naples Day . To start we booked a private tour almost a year ago, Ludovico Franco dealt with my wife through out the year always being in communications with her. We decided with our most endearing gracious driver Salvatore to go driving the Amalfi coast from Naples cruise terminal to Positano stopping along the way at beautiful photo stops. Took beautiful pictures. Then drove pack to Sorrento and spent time in the beautiful village of Sorrento for a couple of hours shopping and sightseeing. Salvatore then gave us a personal tour of Naples on our return. Thank you Salvatore and Thank you Mr.Franco. We highly recommend this company to do your own personal touch tour with Naples Tour Service-Private Tours.Posted on Tripadvisor Michelle SVerified Ludo & Team are THE Best of Napoli! From the moment we contacted Ludo by email to the time he dropped us off again in Rome and every moment in between we were treated like beloved family! My “second mom” hadn’t been back to Naples where she started her married life and had two sons for many years. Ludo listened to her stories of where she loved (lived), had her boys and then surprised us with a customized walk down memory lane! This in addition to a wonderful local expert on Pompeii & The Veiled Christ, Luca, who grew up looking out his bedroom window into the museum and shared the deep mysteries of its conception in vivid detail then found THE best local lunch spot for us. Our trip down the Amalphi Coast with Salvatore that ended in a delightful afternoon lunch in Ravello away from the maddening crowds of the Amalphi Coast. It wasn’t simply their knowledge, or responsive service that makes you love being with them, it is their passion and humble pride in the unique and rich history of Naples that they so freely share. We love Ludo and his team! Don’t hesitate to use them!!Posted on Tripadvisor ΜΥΡΤΩ ΣVerified Excellent organization I chose this company to organize a few days trip to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Napoli tour with my friends and family. From the beginning to the end, everything was so well organized that made our trip unforgettable. Ludovico and Salvatore were excellent. Also the guided tours in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples old center were very good.I recommend the office and of course we will choose them again.Posted on Tripadvisor Craig TVerified EXCEPTIONAL BEST TOUR WE HAVE EVER DONE!!! I cannot rate this tour and specifically Salvatore enough stars Sals insight, experience , knowledge, outstanding communication, professionalism and very likeable personality made this tour exceptional, memorable and unforgettable.Sals intimate knowledge of the area allowed us to visit “secret spots” that most of the large tours would not even know about or be able to stop at to allow us some of the most picturesque photos of the area!!!I travelled with my in-laws and my children therefore there were three different generations and ages and everyone could not rate this high enough.We have done many other memorable tours in Europe and Italy prior to this however this one easily is the best without doubt.To make things even more unforgettable and memorable the value was incredible and cost a fraction of what all of the other tour operators wanted for LARGE groups of 20-50 ppl . This was a private tour for our family of SIX absolutely incredible value service and the highlight of our EUROPE trip by a mile!!!We intend to return to Naples and without question will specifically request for Sal again and will 100% be recommending Sal to any family and friends. We know who are travelling to Naples.Posted on Tripadvisor Chris TVerified Naples and Florence Private Tours For anyone on the NCL Breakaway cruise through the Mediterranean, I have a great tour operator to recommend for the west coast of Italy. We used Naples Tour Service (NTS) in our Naples and Florence port stops. The pick up and drop off was flawless and the tour itself in both cities was outstanding with the tour guide who provided a local’s input into the history of the city and not just the places to see and eat. We tried ItalyTours for our own Rome port stop just to compare tour operators and I’ll honestly tell you it’s so much different. The ItalyTours guide did not say anything in between the drive from the port and Rome. I guess that’s ok if you want to just sleep but for first timers in the given city, it’s nice to know the history and personal point of view from the tour guide. I’ll also add that the private party cost with NTS was about the same if not cheaper than the semi private party cost with ItalyTours. I walked away from the NTS tours with a sense of friendship with the tour guide. ItalyTours was ok but we would expect more from private tour guides. I highly recommend NTS to anyone visiting Italy. Contact info through WhatsApp: Naples Tour Service (they handle the West Coast of Italy) - Ludovico Franco +39 328 738 4056, ask Ludovico to assign Valerio as your Florence tour guide if possible; Salvatore was our tour guide in Naples.Posted on Tripadvisor Vasiliki SVerified Worthy to do it! Prepare for an unforgettable day! Our tour was an absolute dream, and it was all thanks to our incredible guides, Francesco and Salvatore. They were the epitome of professionalism and warmth, arriving precisely on time and greeting us with a calm, patient, and genuinely friendly presence that set the perfect tone for the day.Lunch was a highlight in itself – they arranged a restaurant with an absolutely stunning view and food that was nothing short of spectacular. We indulged in a generous amount of local wine and savored delicious traditional dishes, feeling truly immersed in the local culture.But beyond the logistics and the delicious food, the real magic was in the knowledge and passion Francesco and Salvatore shared. We learned so much, gaining a deeper appreciation for everything we saw and experienced. Their guidance was invaluable, and we are so incredibly grateful for their expertise and kindness.If you're considering this tour, do yourself a favor and request Francesco and Salvatore. They are outstanding guides who will make your experience truly exceptional.Posted on Tripadvisor Tamara SVerified Thank you!! Ludovico was great!
